What is a doula?
The word “doula” comes from the Ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves”. Today’s definition has expanded to include “A special companion who supports you during pregnancy, labor and birth. Doulas are trained to provide continuous, one-on-one care, physical support and emotional support during labor. They may also provide information and support to families before or during birth, and into the postpartum period (Evidence Based Birth).”
What does a doula NOT do?
A doula provides only physical, emotional, and informational support. Doula’s do not provide the following:
- Provide Medical Care: Doulas do not perform clinical tasks such as vaginal exams, fetal heart monitoring, or administering medications.
- Make Decisions: Doulas provide information and support but do not make decisions for the birthing person or their family.
- Replace Medical Staff: Doulas work alongside healthcare professionals but do not replace the roles of doctors, midwives, or nurses.
- Deliver Babies: While they are there to support the birthing person, doulas do not deliver babies unless they are also trained/certified as midwives or medical professionals.
- Guarantee Specific Outcomes: Doulas can’t guarantee a specific birth outcome but strive to support a positive birth experience.
When should I hire a doula?
It’s best to hire a doula early in your pregnancy to ensure you have enough time to build a strong relationship and benefit from their support throughout your pregnancy journey. Ideally, your first or second trimester. HOWEVER, many doulas, including us a Glow & Grow Doula, can accommodate clients at any stage of pregnancy. Early hiring allows for comprehensive prenatal visits, better preparation, and personalized guidance for your needs and preferences.
What are the benefits of having a doula?
Having a doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support, helping reduce anxiety and can promote relaxation during labor. Doulas assist with comfort measures, advocate for birthing preferences, and can reduce the need for medical interventions. Their presence has been linked to shorter labor durations and increased satisfaction with the birthing experience. Additionally, they can offer postpartum support for a smooth transition to life with your new baby.
Can I hire a doula if I plan to use pain medication or have a Cesarean section?
YES! Our goal is to support you and your birthing partner, whatever your birth choices may be. Whether you are planning to use pain medication, have a Cesarean section, induction, or are aiming for a natural birth, a doula can provide valuable support tailored to your needs.
How do I choose the right doula for my needs?
Choosing the right doula is an important decision. Begin by researching local doulas or seeking recommendations from friends, family, Facebook groups, or even your healthcare provider. Schedule consultations with a few doulas to get a sense of their personality, approach, and compatibility with your values and preferences – most doulas offer free consultations. Consider how comfortable and supported you feel during these interactions. Be sure to discuss fees, services, and financial arrangements.
The right doula for you will be someone who makes you feel heard, respected, and confident throughout your birthing journey.
What are some good questions to ask a doula during a consultation?
Coming up with questions can be kind of tough! These are some questions that can help you get a comprehensive understanding of the doula’s experience, approach, and compatibility with your needs.
- What is your philosophy on childbirth and supporting families?
- What kind of training do you have? Do you have any certificates?
- How many births have you attended?
- What services are included in your doula packages?
- What is your availability around my estimated due date?
- How do you support partners during labor and delivery?
- What is your approach to pain management and comfort measures?
- Do you provide postpartum support, and what does that include?
- How do you handle unexpected changes in the birth plan or emergencies?
- How do we stay in touch before and during labor?
You’re a mother-daughter birth doula team? How exactly does that work?
When you choose Glow & Grow Doula, you get to select a primary doula between the two of us, with the other serving as your back-up doula. We have no competition between us, and it’s natural that you might prefer one of us over the other. This approach allows you to build a strong relationship with your chosen doula while still getting to know your back-up doula.
In case your primary doula is unable to attend your birth due to unforeseen circumstances, the back-up doula will step in to support you until your primary doula arrives or cover the entire birth if needed. We also prioritize being fully present for your birth; if labor takes longer, we will call in the back-up doula to allow your primary doula to rest and return refreshed.
